The saffron crocus is the source of the world's most expensive spice. Lilac-purple flowers with dark veining appear in October and November, each producing three vivid red stigmas. Needs a warm sunny position and dry summer dormancy. Can be grown successfully in southern England with good drainage and a long hot summer.

How to grow crocus sativus

Plant 10cm deep in July or August for autumn flowering. Needs a warm sheltered position and dry summer dormancy. South-facing raised beds are ideal. Harvest stigmas when flowers open in the morning. Each flower produces only three stigmas.
