Why visit Veddw House Garden?
Veddw uses clipped yew, meadow planting and framed views to examine its Monmouthshire setting rather than imitate a traditional country-house garden. Enclosed spaces sit beside looser planting, so the route repeatedly shifts between control and wildness. The garden is closely associated with writer Anne Wareham and photographer Charles Hawes, whose work documents its development and arguments about garden-making. It is privately run and opens on selected dates, which gives visits a different character from larger institutional gardens.
What to see
- Walk through the strong yew compartments and the views they frame.
- Compare formal geometry with meadow and less controlled planting.
- Look for references to the history and character of the surrounding Welsh landscape.
